Being in charge of a photographer in an event means you have to capture all the important shows and parts of the party in the middle of the many things that are going on at once. It can be overwhelming if you are not used to it and you can’t decide on your priority. Definitely. I mean, what would you be doing if you don’t even have any idea of where and when it’s going to happen? Make time to visit beforehand so you can get an idea of the color theme, type of lightning and places where you can move to make the shot.
Type of party
What kind of party is it? House? Celebration? Something political? With this you can decide the kind of emotion you want to capture through your lenses.
Aside from the number of guests, which will give you a rough image of how big the party will be, inquire about the key guests that you need to pay attention to. Note them and if possible, before the party, ask for a picture on each of them so you can start grabbing pictures once they enter the party. Google for them if they have pictures of themselves featured on blogs or sites.
If you can get a hold of the complete schedule of the party, you will be able to know when to move where to get the best shot of the event. Incorporate this with your VVIP guest lists, such as their emotions, reactions or simply them watching attentively.
Wear like a guest
You are, technically, attending the party, as a photographer. So, you should not come with excuses like you’re working as event photography professional here, so you want to wear the most comfortable clothes you can find. If it is a casual party, you’ll do fine, but if it is a formal party, wear like you are attending one. Show professionalism and manners, because you are also paying respect to your clients, the holder of the party. Not to mention that everyone there could be someone in need of your service next.
Focus on your job
It’s tempting to get a bit on that cake and a little sip on that wine, but you are working. Most parties provide food for the guests and being hungry can really be distracting with food around you. So, to prevent such embarrassing moment, you should already had your dinner/lunch before the event. If you know how long the event would, you can guess if you will be able to hold back your hunger or not. If it’s too long, bring some snacks that can be finished quickly and get back to your job immediately.
